How does my internship experience fit into my life?
My internship is what I want to do for the rest of my life essentially. I interned with Graduate/PhD student at UCSD in the Joan Heller Brown Lab. I want to go to college and get my undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering. After that, I hope to end up up getting my PhD while working in a lab similar to the one I interned at. This experience also helped me decide what colleges I might want to get my PhD at, if I end up doing that. My mentor told me how when she visited colleges to see where to get her PhD, it seemed like a lot of students were competitive about their research at certain schools. She said that when she made her decision, she liked how research was less competitive, and more focused on the research. Little tips like these helped me get an idea of what to look for while I'm searching for colleges, even for my undergraduate year.

When I look back on internship, what is most important to me? Why?
There are a few things from internship that I value as important. I find it important on how kind the Heller Brown Lab was for letting a high school intern come into their lab for a month. I think that giving back to the community is an important value every person should contain, and I find it great how the lab is constantly giving back to the community. One other thing that I find important is getting experience in a lab before committing to the career. My mentor told me a few times through internship that the most important advice that she got was to get lab experience before going to get her PhD. I think it was crucial that I got lab experience before even picking my major, and am grateful for this experience.

Looking back at my photo-essay and mentor interview, and looking through other photo essays and mentor interviews, what ideas stand out most to me as meaningful, important or striking?
One thing that I find important/striking in all of the mentor interviews are the advice the mentors have to offer. For example, as I mentioned before, the most important advice my mentor has gotten/gave to me was to get lab experience before sticking to a major. I found this to be great advice, and even hope to do undergraduate research throughout college. On Desiree's interview, her mentor said, "I think you have to be careful and not be too pressured by your family." She was referring to career choices when she said this. I just find it interesting reading the different advice each mentor has, because it really shows the character of the mentor and gives the reader something to reflect about
